trying to decide whether to pay the extra price for a 650 classic.  Need information; whats the difference in handling & ride between custom (narrow tire) and the classic (wider tire)?

Generally speaking, the only difference in handling is at very slow speeds, where the smaller the contact patch, the less effort is required to turn the handlebars. However, softer compound tires require more effort also, so a narrow tire that is also softer may feel the same as a wider and harder tire. In either case, the difference is more noticable on the shorter front end of a standard or sport bike. The extended front end of a cruiser tends to make the difference between soft/hard or narrow/wide tires less noticable.

Where you may see a difference is the tendency of the front end to wobble. The wider the contact patch is, the more sensitive the front end is to wobble inducing factors such as rough pavement, low tire pressure, unevenly sliding forks... It's still not a big deal, unless you're one of those riders who likes to show off by riding with both hands off the handlebars.

Basically, the wide or narrow front tire is a matter of style, rather than anything that significantly affects handling on a cruiser OEM front end.

regards,
Joe
