On helmet color... My wife has a PINK german style helmet that really gets her noticed. Although I am a cruiser, I wear a LOUD color scheme full face for touring and freeway commutes. I don't like chaps, but the wifey does. I prefer leather pants.... As far as what to wear for a basic rider course, here is the general consenses for here in WA state...
DOT-approved helmet
Eye protection (eyeglasses, sunglasses, face shield or goggles)
Sturdy over-the-ankle footwear
Full-fingered leather gloves
Long sleeve shirt or jacket
Long denim pants or jeans
Rain gear (Class will continue during rain).
I have ridden in a large group ride with no more than t-shirt, jeans, leather gloves and a dot 1/2 helmet. I did NOT feel safe.

you should wear a helmet for safety purposes, and the duo sun protection : a hat and pair of sunglasses.

It's refreshing to see a cruiser forum being concerned with riding gear.  Having come over to cruisers from the BMW Touring set where it's in style to be AGATT-all the gear all the time. Like others here it's saved my skull more than once. My worse crash was in a parking lot stopped. I had 800 lbs of hot bike on top of me leaking fuel and I could not reach the kill switch. My pants had a huge smoldering hole from the headers and my helmet had rocks stuck in the shell.

I think pants are the neglected area of protection. A full face helmet is mandatory.

So far nobody has mentioned Kevlar patched jeans jike Draggin-they seem better and you can get some knee and hip armor.

I think that the best most protective gear, even over full leather racing Moto GP suits are from a little company in California with European roots:

If this bunk can be believed they publish the following: It;s cut from the website background read this info-

During a four-year period, Motoport studied the injuries sustained in over 500 crashes.  These crashes were serious, resulting in severe injuries or death to the riders.  The crashes that were studied in Germany occurred on the autobahn, rural areas, and in cities.  Four doctors analyzed and recorded all the details of each injury.  Autopsies were performed on the riders, documenting injuries that resulted in death.  The details of the crashes and the apparel worn were also studied.

The study’s finding were alarming.  It was revealed that the most serious injury to the body was the initial impact area.  In 83.2% of cases, the initial impact was below the waist.  The main initial impact was the knee/shin and full front-to-back thigh area. Over one third resulted in broken-bone injuries.  Well over half of the victims (59.4%) suffered arm injuries.  Other body regions that received frequent severe injuries were the shoulders, chest, and collar bone.

In short the armor that Motoport supplies covers you like a dirt bike stunt rider but it's comfortable enough to wear in the summer..

I'm not affiliated with Motoport but if you looking for the ultimate in protective gear then look for your self. The pants are custom made but the  jackets are not real stylish so I still wear a heavy leather or 1000 count Cordura textile jacket by First Gear.

All the advice above is good. However, the first thing to decide is; what is you budget for all this stuff? Once you decide that, set priorities. Maybe something like:
Helmet - gloves - boots - pants - jacket

Price them in order to get the most for your money. People on this site can give you advice on where to buy. You have to get all of them. You can upgrade as money allows, unless you have deep pockets now! Have fun!

If you have your own bike and if you are interested to riding a bike then there are many things that you should consider in your mind like safety is very important for you so you should wear a helmet.
