We are a group of Boston University students developing a new motorcycle safety product. We would greatly appreciate your input regarding the product. The survey below will take approximately 2-5 minutes:

Our product is an additional brake-light and turn signal system that will increase the visibility of riders to other vehicles. The lighting system consists of two separate components: 1. the helmet component and 2. the wireless transmitter. The helmet component consists of a brake-light and turn signals and can be mounted on the rear of any motorcycle helmet. The wireless transmitter is easily integrated into the motorcycle’s existing wiring and will intercept the signal when the rider brakes or signals to turn and relay that signal to the helmet component. This allows the system to synchronously light-up with the motorcycle's existing brake and turn directional system.

OK, thins that are wrong with it: 1) The Helmet mounting system will not work unless it is completely removable and it cannot violate the integrity of the helmet.It need to work with half helmets as well. 2) The Brake and turn signal lights need to go out if you turn your head more than 10 deg off center line, otherwise the cross traffic may get confused by your lights. 3) The unit needs to shut down if you look down. 4) The turn and brake light need more separation or smaller brighter lights. As a biker I would do everything in my power to stop this from coming to market, because some friggin Yahoo state senator puke or busy body soccer mom will say "oh, that would be safer" and end up pushing to make it mandatory, requiring it on all bikes. That may be good for you, but its BAD for us. I like safety. I like CHOICE more.

If you REALLY want to make my ride safer, figure out a device that aids in Oncoming traffic seeing me. Bikes getting rear ended is a problem, but MORE bikes have oncoming or side street cars cut across their path with the classic "I never saw them" BS excuse. Create a front headlight that is irritating to the eye of anyone looking at it from a slight angle out to about 45 degrees. We need to catch their eye without sacrificing the function of the light during evening hours. That would be a GREAT contribution to motorcycling, more so than your previous endeavor.

I agree with Apz it would be better if you came up with a headlight as described.

I'd suspect that it would be more effective if it was just the bake, and not turn signals (turning head is case in point). Possibly like the hyperlights that are sold to hard wire to the brake light (http://www.hyperlites.com/). It would get the message up to eye level, not that a lot of people see more than 2 seconds in front of the vehicle, but, it at least would catch peripheral vision.
Of course, just getting the existing taillight to put out more light than a firefly would be a step in the right direction too.
