We're heading for Milwaukee via Key West and the Blue Ridge Parkway middle of August. Can anyone give me a realistic estimate of how long the BRP should take from Blowing Rock north? Mapquest and Google are helpful for mileage, but they really don't tell me how much time we'll spend off the bike here and there.

Can you clarify? Are you interested in tourist stops/eateries, etc? If that's what you're in for, I know of some places up Chicago way.

Speed limit is 45 the whole way. I was on it in late may for about 8 hours total across 2 days. There was a heavy fog/light drizzle almost the whole time with temps around 45-50, so, my average speed was somewhat lower..
When I got down into the valley, it was partly sunny and almost 70.
I did have a friend who hit it when it was sunny, and warm... within 2 hours he wanted a different road.

I am going on a road trip in June of 2010. Starting from Tampa Fl. And going north all up into the Blue Ridge and more. I will be doing some camping and staying some hotels. I hope to do around 3000 miles. so far it is just me going. If there is any one that would like to do this ride with me just let me know. It would be nice to have someone come along. And can anyone tell me what exits to take on the blue ridge parkway that have fuel stops.

Get the book, Best of the Blue Ridge Parkway, by Nye Simmons. It has all the gas stops, hotel info, camping and points of interest along the blue ridge.
Best wishes: Doug

Get updated GPS maps. On my trip, trying to get out of Banner Elk (near the new Indian headquarters) was a rare treat. Fog so thick you could only see 50 ft. Add to that, a main road that had been moved. Add to that, a GPS with a 3 year old map.
Can we say, Keystone Kops? When I finally figured it out, and got onto an old road, it directed me to the Blue Ridge correctly/. About an hour of socked in later.... I decided I made the wrong choice, and got off. Went into the valley, and got sun.
I think that's the take away. Have a plan if the Blue ridge is socked in. It happens a lot.
