I bought an'07 (NEW)IN APRIL OF THIS YEAR ('09)W/00000 MILAGE.I AM HAVING PROBLEMS WITH SLIGHT BACKFIRING THROUGH BOTH THE EXHAUST AND INTAKE. THIS PROBLEM ISN'T CONSTANT.I MAY RIDE FOR A WEEK AND IT WON'T HAPPEN.THEN IT WILL APPEAR AGAIN.ALSO AT TIMES WHEN I SHIFT FROM 1ST TO 2ND IT SEEMS AS IF SOMEONE TURNS OFF THE KEY(NO THROTLE RESPONSE)THEN IT'S LIKE IT TURNS BACK ON AND RUNS FINE ,UNTIL THE NEXT TIME. .AT TIMES WHEN I STOP FOR FUEL AND TRY TO START IT ITS AS IF THE BATTERY IS ALMOST DEAD. THEN I HIT THE STARTER IMMEDIATLLY AND IT FIRES RIGHT UP.I HAVE HAD THESE PROBLEMS SINCE THE DAY I PURCHASED THE BIKE.IT ALSO (ON THE FIRST DAY I BROUGHT IT HOME).WHEN I TURNED ON THE KEY IT MADE A VERY LOUD WHINNING SOUND,LIKE SOMEONE PINCHING THE NECK OF A BALLOON WHILE LETTING OUT THE AIR.THE FUEL INJECTOR LIGHT HAS STAYED ON DURING THESE INCIDENTS. IT IS UNDER WARRENTY AND I HAVE HAD IT AT TWO DIFFERENT DEALERS AND LEFT IT WITH THEM FOR 13 DAYS COLLECTIVLLY, BUT NEITHER HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM.(IT ISN'T THE GAS.I USE 93-97 OCTANE FROM DIFFERENT STATIONS.AND IT ISN'T THE BATTERY. I'VE HAD IT CHECKED.)ALSO CHECKED KICKSTAND AND KILLSWITCH.IT HAPPENS ON COLD DAYS,HOT DAYS,WET DAYS,DRY DAYS SO ,I CANT FIND A CONSTANT.THE ENGINE CAN BE COLD,OR IT COULD HAVE BEEN RIDDEN FOR A FEW HOURS, MAKES NO DIFFERENCE .HAS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED THESE PROBLEMS?AND IF SO COULD YOU OFFER ANY INSIGHT/OR SUGGESTIONS. THANKS

My Kawasaki did that when it was new, it was a loose cable on the battery.

Hope its that simple for you.
Best wishes: Doug

The "whinning" sound you hear is just the fuel injector pump... that is why the FI light comes on.  If it stops making this noise when you turn the key, you've got a big problem!

Suggestion - don't use high test gas on this bike. It has a low compression motor that runs best on 87 or 89 octane.

As far as the starting problem goes - make sure your battery terminals are clean and tight... I clean and tighten mine twice a year.  C90s are great bikes, but they are kind of touchy about their batteries.

Sometimes the decomp valve(relieves pressure for starting) on the rear cylinder gets out of adjustment and keeps the motor from turning over. This is an intermitent problem as you describe. It's no big deal to adjust it, but you can compensate for this when it happens by rolling the bike a foot or two in gear with the clutch out to move the pistons to a better position.

The backfiring comes from the lean fuel/air mixture and is normal with a these bikes.  It is caused by clean air feature calle the pair valve, which is located under the chrome "football" that most people think is the aircleaner.  The pair valve injects air to burn off waste fuel in the exhaust.  Some guys stop the backfiring by removing or disabling the pair valve. Kits are available to do the removal, but technically it is illegal as you will be disabling an anti-pollution device.

I recently installed one a Gman Bully FI controller

It gave me 9 more hp and 20 more ft lbs of torque, and stopped my C90T from backfiring.   Much better performance and no plenalty on the gas mileage as long as I mind my right wrist.

CapnIcthus,
Appreciate the feedback-(I also suggested the possibillity of the decomp valve to the dealers--OF COURSE,they told me,"that wouldn't cause THAT problem.")-- What you say makes sense. Haven't checked it yet,as I have just finished reading your reply, but I will.Any thoughts as to the engine cut-off between 1st&2nd?(I have checked all the connections to the batt.and checked for anyloose pin/plug connectors). Thanks again!   jerryk90
