Honda xl 350 Starting Help

I have a 1978 Honda XL 350, single cylinder 4 stroke engine. I recently purchased it in Colorado, rode it there fine, and then trailered to St. Louis. When the engine is cold, I can start it up just fine, one kick and it roars to life. It does not idle however, and if you let the throttle down, it will die. After this initial start, it will not start back up again until the engine is left alone for a while. Then, after that wait, it will start again.
I have checked the spark plug, and it does spark (though, I wouldn't be able to judge if it's sparking consistently to when it should). Battery voltage is fine. Gas if fine.
I dont think the engine is flooding.
Help would be hugely appreciated!

When starting, have you tried the choke on starting it? May shed a little light depending on the answer.

Well, I have the choke all the way in when I start it that first time. Starts right up after that first kick even.
