Three times in an hours time I came so close to being clobbered by drivers oblivious to my presence. Is there any way to modify my 2007 classic to make it louder without getting into the carb. re-jetting issue?

When we took the motorcycle riding course in 2007, the instructors told us that if you experience 2 or more near-misses in a ridng season, you need to re-evaluate your riding habits.  Three times in an hour has got emergency bells clanging and red flags all over it.  Your mufflers are not the problem nor are louder pipes the solution.  Please put your pride and/or ego in your pocket and get competent advice and coaching ASAP.  Cheers.  Herb.

I've been riding for 9 years, probably 50k miles, and I don't think I've had that many incidents in a week or a year. I have had people decide to drive in my lane, but it wasn't because they didn't know I was there.

If you don't want to take the MSF course, you might want to go to the local library, and read Proficient MOtorcycling by David L Hough. I've got the soft cover edition copyright 2000.
Read Chapter 4, Urban Traffic Survival. You may find it gets rid of your problem. You should read the rest of it too. I'm plugging thru, and still learning, or on minor points, I diasgree, but, it forces me to look closely at why I why I disagree.

For what it's worth, I am alive because I DON'T have loud pipes. Blind left hand sweeper, as I came up, throttle still on, I heard the screech of truck brakes from the other side. He wouldn't have heard my pipes, and it wouldn't have mattered if he did, he was already on the brakes for all they were worth. I grabbed a handful of brake (and a footfull). He popped around the corner mostly in my lane. Fortunately, I'd almost stopped before the turn. He got thru the turn, and out of my way, and I got on with my ride, without a single pair of soiled shorts on either side.

The other thing I'd point out is that motorcycles have an on demand noise making device. It's called a horn. Stock on most bikes is horrid, but, I've seen everything up to electric/air horns. When you hit them, people think Peterbuilt.
I'd put some money there before tearing apart the exhaust.

I'd recommend the MSF course and positioning yourself where motorists are most likely able to see you.  Perhaps your hanging in their "blind" spots.
