Dropped a glove that melted the synthetic nylon/plastic material on the exhaust pipe.  What is the best way to clean this off without scratching/damaging the finish on the pipes.  Thanks

Items needed: Rubber gloves, paper surgical mask, Easy Off Oven Cleaner spray can, three rags, bucket of water, chrome polish. Procedure: Wear rubber gloves and paper mask. Run your engine two minutes to warm up the pipes. Shut off engine. Spray Easy Off Oven Cleaner on a clean but disposable rag. Wipe off melted plastic and rubber from the pipes turning to a clean portion of rag sprayed again with Easy Off frequently. Avoid contacting hot pipes with rubber gloves. Rinse cleaned pipes with the second water-soaked rag. When pipes are cool and dry, use third rag and polish pipes with chrome polish. In case you did touch rubber gloves to hot pipes, repeat procedure.

Thank you very much.....I hear that there is an Easy Off Oven Cleaner for cold ovens as well as one for hot.  Which one do you use or does it make a difference?

This is going to sound like BS but I had a passenger melt the heel of there shoe to my pipe, and then I melted my rain suit to it also.  The ONLY thing I could find to take it off is SOS pad with soap.  Have to scrub a little but it does come off and it   does not leave a mark on the pipes.  I have had to do this twice (2) now and worked good and left no marks.

On those rare occasions when I bother removing melted stuff, the oven cleaner does the job. I say rare, when really I don't bother at all, until it's time to sell the bike.

Using steel wool on chrome isn't the best idea. It'll work just fine, but you'll end up with very tiny bits of ferrous material imbedded in the surface of the chrome. This tends to rust when you ride in the rain. The same thing happens when you use steel wool on stainless steel. That's why there is non-ferrous "stainless steel wool". If you have to use steel wool on chrome, that's the stuff you should be using.

Joe
