possible backfire???

I have a 2003 Yamaha V-Star Classic. It has Cobra pipes and has a carb instead of fuel injection. Here is the problem. When I take off from a start I get a lot of popping and cracking and some "lurching" while accelerating. Usually this happens in first gear. Once I gather some speed it seems to go away and accelerate normally. I'm not sure if this is normal or not. My guess is it's not. Any advice would be helpful.
