Reference: Maryland Senate Bill 766 - Vehicle Laws - Protective Headgear Requirements for Motorcycle Riders - Exceptions

If this bill is passed, the current law will be revised to make it legal to ride a motorcycle without a helmet if you are at least 21 years old and have either had your motorcycle license for at least two years or successfully completed a Motorcycle Safety Foundation approved motorcycle-rider course. The effect of this revision will then be reviewed in three years and adjustments made accordingly.

Please call the MD Senate to let them know that you support Sentate Bill 766 and want them to vote on it.

Before you ask your representative in government to vote to, apparently, weaken existing mandatory helmet laws, take the time to review readers' and contributors' comments in this Forum's thread "Helmets: the Victimless Crime".  The cemeteries and re-hab facilities are full of examples of why helmets should always be worn at all times, regardless of how short or long the trip, or the locale in which you ride.

Urge your representatives to vote, but urge them to vote to maintain mandatory helmet laws, and if that law is not already in place, urge them to implement it.  Being 21 years old and having passed an MSF course only provides some small measure of, hopefully, maturity of judgement and beginnings of adequate riding skills acquisition, but offers no guarantee at all that you suddenly are a more safe occupant of public highways.
