if possible, test ride them both and get the one that feels right. i know the vtx is a bullet proof bike and the new kaw 950 looks sweet. also check out new old stock bikes as well. there are plenty of 1-2 year old brand new bikes sitting at the dealer that dealers are very willing to deal on. in todays economy and this time of year the buyer should have plenty of leverage. good luck.
if the house is a rocking don't bother knocking, just come on in...SRV

Can't sing the praises of the VTX (not having owned one). I rode a VN800 for 37k (7 years) with only a hiccup. Most problems were me trying to tweak. The 900 seems to be the 800 with all flaws fixed.
I bought it as a last year in 2001. In '06, I bought a 2003 with only 19k on it, for about half of a new bike. Since it's a Wing, I figure it's barely broken in.

Won't speak about a VTX since I don't own one. I do own a 900LT and absolutely love it. Easy handling, lots of extras available for it, and great mileage.

Test drive them. You will have better luck with a test drive on a used bike. No one wants a new bike with lots of miles on them and a used bike will be broke in and after you make your pick of what you like buy a new one. Try everything, even the bikes you are not considering. Myself could not afford a Harley and after riding one for 12 years, whent to a Honda this time around and was surprised at how I enjoy it more.

There are threads comparing the VL 900 to the Suzuki with extensive posts. Check those out as well. After decades off, I now have a VL 900. After one season, would purchase again.
When comparing, I look at available used items. To me a big inventory indicates unhappy current owners. Can't offer anything on your other choice.
