buy a used bike with less than 15,000 miles if you can finance it . then the 1st owner will have likly put the goodies on it already. pipes, chrome, bags, sheild ETC.then with 10,000 you can buy a nicer bike than you thought you could afford like a yamaha stratoliner, victory kingpen,or wut ev! if you have to buy new then the kaw. 1600 is the right bike!

Just curious if you have purchased yet.  I am with renshawlc here.  I would consider 2nd hand 1 or 2 years old.  That way all of the ugly maintenance stuff is already done and a lot of the expensive toys are added.  Most of the lost equity is already burned off.  It seems, these days, that no motorcycle is holding it's value.  That all ended when a certain American motorcycle company doulbed their production. That may change again with the new EPA rules of 2010.  BTW, anyone wanting to build that "custom" stripped down model will want to do that this year and have it done by 2010.  After that you will only be allowed to build ONE non (EPA) compliant motorcycle per lifetime and you won't be allowed to sell it for 5 years, FOR ANY REASON.  If you pass away 1 year after building it, your family won't be allowed to sell it for four years.  Get a divorce, the judge will not be able to force you to sell the bike for the remainder of the 5 federally mandated years. Things are about to shake up folks.  Pay attention.

I would recommend you take a look at RoadStar 1700 and take it for a test drive . An outstanding bike with exceptional after market support and versatility that few others can match .

Belt drive
fuel injected
in your price range
awesome power
plenty of after market support

You'll be glad you did .
Good hunting .

A few things to remember.
1. Belt vs shaft. Belts have been around for over 50 years, if they were bad, we would all be riding with shaft drive. I have a shaft drive. Less maintenance maybe, my friends Harley is the same age as my Honda, 7 years no complaints on either. Really does not matter.
2. Air vs liquid cool. If air cooled bikes all over heated in the south you would only see liquid cooled. Not a concern.
3. Carborated vs fuel injected. If it was an option, I would get FI only because I live up north.  The choke works fine.

So I guess it boils down to money, comfort and looks. Everyone has a favorite and whatever you ride will become yours.

Remember to put some dollars to the side to by lots of extra chrome.
