roadliner dies intermittently no idle restarts fine

Dealer has been unable to fix and has a couple others with same problem...wondering if anyone has fix or has problem.

roadliner (07) starts and runs fine, once in while, you will come off speed to a stop sign or slow for curves and the bike just dies, no idle.  if you keep up the rpms manually it will keep running indefinitley but let go of the throttle and it dies.  it will restart after dying without a problem but the problem will continue till you shut it down for maybe 1-5 minutes...then everything is ok.  totally intermittent...can happen hot, cold, dry, wet, any elevation, day, night.... 38k on the odometer but has done this from day 1...any ideas?

I have an 07 stratoliner(same bike as yours but with accessories),purchased new in sept.this year.In just over 3 months I've racked up 6k miles with no problems.I LOVE this bike and it runs like a raped ape.Sounds like your dealer is retarded.Maybe a computer problem or short in wiring.Take it somewhere else.good luck

I have an 07 Strat with the exact same problem  and get the same response from dealer. Can't find problem can't duplicate problem they say "must be rider error" I'm about ready to start a law suit.

My 2004 Honda Aero does the same thing.  In fact it just did it 5 minutes ago. Died pulling into the parking lot after riding 5 miles through town.  Dealer told me nothing is wrong.  So it's supposed to do this?  I set up the idle which apparently didn't work.  I'm running it with Seafoam in it since it's carburated, also didn't work.  If you get responses let me know.  No one on my forum has come up with an idea.

Ok, this is going to be a longshot, but, a couple of years ago, I heard of a similar problem on some Vulcans.
Symptoms as stated:
bike dies while riding, and won't restart for a couple of minutes after the event.

On the Vulcans, the problem was a fuel vent being plugged. The tank would get into  a vacuum, and fuel wouldn't flow out. A couple of minutes allowed enough air in. It also most commonly happened when the tank was full to nearly full.
Test:
When it happens, immediately open the fuel tank, listen for air rushing in, and the bike being immediately ready to re-start.

Hope this helps.

Doesn't sound similar at all. The Vulcans died even at full throttle. They simply ran out of gas with a full tank. There, we were dealing with three separate problems that all caused the same symptoms: vacuum line leaks, kinked tank vent hoses and poor gas cap design.

However, this "sometimes stalls when rpm drops to idling" is something that some VN900's have done. As I understand it, Kawasaki has traced the problem to the FI controller.

With a carbuerated bike, I'd look for air intake leaks after the carb, contaminated gas or a carb idle circuit problem. I wouldn't know where to start with FI, although I suppose the first two ideas would still apply.

regards,
Joe

Yep, and most of them had carbs, but it did hit some of the FI rigs like the 1500 Drifter. Knew a couple of people who got hit with it. Sometimes it happened when you pulled in the clutch and let off the throttle. Voltage drops to the fuel pump, and it suddenly is pumping slower.

Some of  bikes in question here have fuel pumps and a couple have carbs, and it costs nothing for them to check it out.

Gotta have something to do while waiting for the bike to restart. If it sounds like opening a can of nuts, they got a solution. If not... well they weren't doing anything anyway.

I'd check out the vacuum leak 2nd, but, you've got to admit, it's odd that the bike stalls out, won't restart for a while, then works fine. Except that it's hitting FI bikes too and is happening even on cold days, it almost sounds like an old school vapor lock.

I'm still betting fuel delivery problem 1st.

Different idea:
It just occured to me, the rubber fuel intake tube on my wife's car dissolved a couple of months ago. Talking to the service manager, he mentioned they were getting a lot of problems like that in the past year. Ethanol??? It would such the moisture out of the rubber, and make it brittle.

I have a 2008 stratoliner. Put Cobra dragster pipes, a power commander III, & a Big Air Kit too. This bike runs awesome.. I never drove it new in stock condition so I have not had any experience such as yours. I had the above things installed before I drove it out the dealers lot. I do have a lot of popping and my bike runs great. It is something about the decel that allows too much lean in these pipes and I get lots of backfiring or popping..

I only am interjecting this letter as I have read the fxstein articles and I have to admit I believe he is on cue about that.

If anyone reading this thread has encountered my issues I would love to get your side and answers and work..

Thanks
