v-star 950/1300?

Hi I am currently looking at a new bike but am trying to find the right one that will fit me. I am a very small build at 5'7 1/2 - 5'8 (173cm) and only 140lbs. I really like the added features of the V-star 1300 but dont know if I can handle the power as I have only ridden a 250cc for the past year and a half. And if i'm concerned about the V-star 1300, the raider (which i hear might have some overheating problems) and the roadliner might be out of the question. I really like the style of yamaha's cruisers but must admit I do not know a lot from the other makers in the industry. I looked at the Triumphs, the speedmaster might be a good choice. Any advice on a light touring (weekend getaways) and commuting motorcycle for a person of my size would be greatly appreciated.

As for the Raider (and Roadliner which shares the same 113 *** engine) you really do not need to EVER worry about that engine overheating....that engine is bulletproof. The "-liner" is a dream machine but I think the bike is probably a little too big for your needs/requirements.

As for the 1300 and 950, I can tell you that the 1300 is a wonderful bike and you would be able to control the power of the bike. I don't know much about the 950 other than what I have read, which so far has been extremely positive, and you can pretty much guarrantee that Star designs and builds top of the line bikes. You may want to wait for the 950 as it is definately a bike that will fit a shorter rider extremely well while still providing an outstanding power (HP and torque) to weight ratio.  

I'm 5'-9" and just bought a new V-Star 1300.  I can put both feet flat on the ground at stops (31" inseam) and she handles like a dream.  Excellent power.  One of the current problems I see in the motorcycle industry is the lack of "midsize" cruisers.  Kawasaki is phasing out the 1500 and 1600, so they will have a huge gap between 900 and 1700cc.  Suzuki has a similar gap between 800 and 1500cc.  Yamaha has the greatest selection of mid size bikes.  The new 950 is getting rave reviews, has updated technology, and is expected to be as fast as the 1100.  The Roadliner or Raider are an awful lot of bike for a smaller rider, but I don't think you can go wrong with the 950 or 1300.  

I'm once taller and a lot fatter... I ride a suzuki c-50 T and I love it.  Take a look at the Harley Roadster in 883 and 1200.  Also the Harley Low Rider in the same size.  The Kawasaki Vulcan 900 is a good bike too...

problems with the height of the bike or size. If you know
what you are doing you can handle the power. I have ridden several other bikes and wouldn't trade mine for any of them.  

I love the looks and everything that I've read about the 950.  If you are a newer rider, I'd definitely recommend that bike.  As mentioned, Star bikes are generally bulletproof.

I agree that Star is really stealing the show in the middle range of displacement!  I'm not sure why, with the economy like it is, that the bike manufacturers aren't learning from Star & keeping the mid-class bikes around.  It seems that the rest are building ever larger bikes along with bikes that are more akin to street racers.  Good luck to them all on keeping up with Star!!!!  

I agree with everyone that has replied thus far about the V-Star 1300, while I am not a smaller individual....the 1300 is  a very comfortable ride and handles like a dream. I ride a SV1000s and when I look for a vacation from the sportsbike scene I borrow my dad's V-star. The power to weight ratio in my opinion is amazing and as far as having shorter legs, you should be fine the seat sits low enough that you will be able to touch the ground. You also might look into a Dyna Low...I have a friend that bought one and she loves it.  

I just got the 950 this past weekend and it's f'n great. I'm a fairly short guy about 5'6"/5'7" about buck 50 and fairly new to riding. I went from the vulcan 500 to the vStar 950 and it was somewhat of a jump but after half a day of riding i felt comfortable with the vStar. Highway is good and I live in NYC and handles city traffic well too.

I'll be honest I fell in love with it at the moto show this last winter as soon as I sat on it and put all the other bikes I was looking at out of the pic.
