Are new air intake systems really needed with aftermarket pipes?

I; NO. IF you want a little better performance you should rejet the carbs. If all you want is the good sonding bike then just run the pipes and have fun. scruffy

Normally, re-jetting is recommended when you put on pipes, and it's not bad if they do it right. You don't need a new main jet, just fixing the low end. http://www.motorcyclecruiser.com/tech/motorcycle_jet_kits_carburetion/index.html
Bikes come out running lean, so, if they fatten up the bottom, you end up with a better ride (doesn't matter whether the pipes were swapped or not).
If you replace the intake on the other hand, re-jetting is mandatory. You have 5-10% more air going in, you need more fuel to keep the lean burn from getting dangerous.
