Leather is fine for local riding, but make sure you also get a rain jacket to go over it. Water won't harm you or the bike, but it's bad news for leather :-)

People who ride behind a windshield usually find leather is too hot in the summer, but if you ride in the wind it's easy to keep cool by simply loosening the neck closure. Stop and go city traffic is even worse than riding behind a windshield, for heat. A lot of people buy a mesh jacket for those conditions. Mesh riding jackets will work just as well as leather, for keeping the broken body parts in approximately the right locations if you go tumbling across the pavement.

While leather is traditional, currently it's hard to find decent riding leather. Most leather riding gear is made from split cowhide these days instead of full thickness cowhide. That makes it more flexible and lighter, but also less resistant to abrasion on the pavement. We generally refer to it as fashion leather, because it's more for show than protection. If you want protection, look for horsehide.

There is better stuff than leather out there, abrasion resistant textiles with padded armor plates to protect bones from impact. Many of them also allow some air flow through the outer layer, to help keep you cool in the summer.

regards,
Joe

statistics say most auto accidents occur within a mile of home but I think it's because we are in that range twice on every trip.  I have a jacket from Fox Creek that is cool to ride but not much good in city driving.  Road rash may be less of a problem if you are driving in slow traffic, I ride without as do allot of people we all take chances otherwise we would drive an SUV.

I have a mesh jacket from tour master.  It came with a rain liner and winter insert.  I live in tennessee and find that I am actually more comfortable with it on than off in the heat.  Keeps the sun from beating down on me.  It has armor in the elbows, shoulders, back and front for protection.  Enjoy the ride.

Summer is a very hot season and as per the season we should use some accessories when we are going to ride a motorbike.
