Perhaps it was wishful thinking but I believe I saw that someone had included the Yamaha memo number for the v-star 1300 clutch rattle. Blog said someting like a friend saw a memo #? on a dealers desk.
I spoke with my dealer and would like to provide the memo number. Would you have more iformation and/or the memo #?
Thanks in advance.

I just bought my V-Star 1300 (a 2007 model) and I get the same noises. I'm no motorcycle mechanic, so I'm not sure I can pull off the fork oil trick. Not to mention I have no way to get the bike off the ground. The clutch (or whatever) noise is annoying, and I too would like some kind of reference number to the dealer so I have at least something to show them besides my befuddled look and a finger pointing at the engine.
Thanks a lot!

I have a VStar 1300 07 I have 4200mi on it I have the front end clunk and a whinning noise when letting off the throttle the lifters are noisy. I havea whinning noise that seems to be getting louder when I first start it up. The dealer hasn't been any help. The bike is comfortable forme to ride and performs good on the highway, but If these problems can be fixed I would like to take of them before the warranty runs out.

Just got my bike back from the dealer and I got the newer better fluid response to fix the issues. Of course, both still exist. I'm going to contact Yamaha and see what they say. If I get any decent information, I'll post it here.

I got my 07 1300T in April this year and have been going nuts with this clutch clatter. I had my 3000 mile service yesterday at Watt's Yamaha in Lubbock Tx. I asked the tech if he knew bout this problem and he brought out a tech book. He let me read the page addressing the problem. It stated that Yamaha had realized this problem in the 07s and fixed it in the 08s by inproving the clutch design. They have supposedly eliminated the clatter and reduced the wine with this update. The tech told me that it is an easy replacement (less than a couple of hours), and FREE!!! The page stated that while the sounds are not due to a defect it can atribute to loss of customer satisfaction. So my assembly is on order, and when I get my replacement I will let you guys know how it performs. I'll also post the part info when I get my receipt.....

I have an 08 Vstar 1300T and I'm not having any of the front end issues. However I do have that whinny engine noise that everybody is complaining about. I just got off the phone with Yahama customer relations (800-962-7926) and they said they fixed the front end problems on the 08 models, lucky me. They also said I was the first caller about this whinny engine problem and to take my bike into a Yahama dealer. At $200 a pop for service that's not an acceptable answer. I'm not real impressed with Yahama's customer service. I already mentioned this strange engine sound to my dealer at the 1000mi service and he said everything checked out OK. If this is a normal sound I'm looking for another bike from a different manufacturer. I sure would like to know if anybody has been able to correct this engine problem without tearing the engine apart and doing a lifter job. I love the way the bike rides but that engine sound is driving me nuts and it's seems worse since the 1000mi checkup.

One more question for the Vstar 1300 Yamaha guys. Has anybody done anything with the exhaust system? It's way to quiet. I'd like to get some additional noise and performance.

bout the exhaust check out youtube, there is a vid of a guy who removed the baffle on the stock exhaust and it sounds pretty good. also tells you how he did it, but once its done you can't go back.

Hey, I just got home after having my 07 upgraded with the 08 clutch. It made a HUGE difference, my bike sounds great in neutral idle now. NO CLATTER!!!! I have good news, if your bike is under warranty, this fix is on Yamaha!
My repair order states the following: Job: REPLACE CLUTCH BASKET Part Number Quantity Description 99999-03812-00 1 Driven Gear Assy Set 3D8-15453-00-00 1 Gasket Labor 1.3 hrs
So if you've got a noisy 2007 1300, it's time to hit up your shop. I rode it 104 miles to the shop, so the time they took to do this included cooling the exhaust with a fan, as it has to be removed for this service. I was at the shop for only 2 hrs. and even if you have to pay, it is worth it.

I got the 2008 clutch upgrade to my 2007 V-Star 1300 too. I found a new '07 at a great price at my local dealer, and thanks to this forum and KnightStarRider, I knew enough about the clutch noise to ask the dealer to fix it before I even picked up the bike. I've noticed no unusual noises (but never had the original 07 clutch to compare it to.) The notice from Yamaha is a "Tech Tip" and has no identifying number. The subject is "Rattle Noise from Engine". The fix replaces the primary driven gear, collar, drive sprocket, and thrust plate, and adds a bearing that the 2007 didn't have. Worked great and didn't cost me a dime - thanks for the timely info!

I am a technician at a local dealer and would like to clear a few things up.
Depending on where you are located, many shops around the country use 20w oil instead of 10w which is what the factory uses. This would explain why a dealer would tell you the bike comes with thinner oil from the factory. This is not BS, and thicker oil does tend to quiet things down a little.
Whining on decel - this is very common on V Stars, and other belt driven bikes. As long as your belt is in spec, you're good! I've ridden many of these and it seems worse when they're brand new and haven't been "broken in".
Thunking noises over significant bumps are normal - I haven't figured this out yet to be honest with you, but it seems like it can be attributed to the rear suspension.
Finally, I've recently learned from a Yamaha gold technician that the TDC marks on the flywheel for front and rear cylinders are not always the loosest points on the valve train. Yamaha service manuals advise to adjust at these points. Many times your valves will be in spec at TDC but about 45 degrees later you'll find some slack which will cause this tapping. This had me stumped for the longest time until I was enlightened with this information.

So what oil should be used in the 1300 anyway? The Owner's manual says "20w40", which I've never seen or heard of. Should I use 10w40 or 20w50? Does it really matter?

Hey All, I’ve got the 07 V Star, yes it has the all the noises. The clucking can be fixed w/progressive springs or the metal sleeve (tube inside of front shock) can be replaced with a piece of pvc pipe 1 inch longer than the metal tube. I didn’t like the soft front in dive so I replaced the springs. The valve noises are common, the valves tighten up and then loosen later after a couple 1000 miles, and I put 17,000 miles on mine in 2008. It’s in for the first valve adjustment right now. To squeeze the 80 hp out of the motor, there are some close tolerances which make it noisy, The whirling noise that you here is more than likely the belt; it should ride in the center of the back pulley. If the tension gets loose it will move to the side and make a noise. Also the transmission gears a squared off which causes the other whining noises. I have decided to not let the dealer take apart my clutch; I can live with that noise. I have done most of the mods to the bike and enjoy riding it; it’s a well balanced bike. If you have the big windshield there are wind buffing issues, lowers will fix this. I’m 5’7” and I was leaning forward just a little, the RSTD handle bars stopped the pain in the middle of my back. I drilled out the exhaust to get a little more sound out of the bike without the price of replacing the muffler. Also the air box, this mod gives you the most noticeable change in the bike I thought. Just my 2 cents
Enjoy the ride, it’s a great bike, no bike is prefect, DJ

I get the same Clunk when I hit a bump and determined it is the windshield making the noise. I haven't tried to fix it though, I've just learned to hit the bumps at a lower speed and therefore I don't get the Clunk.
