Stratoliner Exhaust Question

I have a 2008 Stratoliner that I just love. My other bike is a 1997 Harley Softtail Custom FXSTC. The stock bullet slip ons that came with the bike could be drilled to give them the perfect tone and sound. You may recall that the muffler had a small thin disk in the center, straight down in the middle of the muffler. Hot Rod magazine had noted in an article that you could take a 7/8 inch keyhole drill and put it on a 15 inch extension and drill a hole through the disk. This would allow for a better flow through and perfect sound. There was no need to adjust the carb or play with the timing.
I did it and it was perfect! Just as they had said.

QUESTION: I love the look of the stock Stratoliner exhaust. The sound is almost there. Have you heard of anyone doing to the Stratoliner exhaust what could be done to the Harley exhaust. It appears that the Stratoliner may have a thin disk in the final chamber to divert the gas through the last stage of baffles.
If it can be done, I can save $700.00 on an exhaust and $250.00 on a timing box plus labor. At least  $1000.00 dollars savings.

Hi Starman,

I owned a VTX 1300, and I drilled out the pipes on that which worked pretty good. I traded it in on a stratoliner last week.  The Strat has a plate about halfway inside the tail pipe that I punched a few holes through just to see what would happen, it made the exhaust louder with no popping or misfiring.  I think that I might try to pull the pipe off and get to it from the other side with a hole saw or something similar. I put about 7 1/4 inch holes in the pipe with a 12 inch long 1/4 inch aircraft bit attached to a 12 inch drill bit extension. It made a difference in the sound, but not enough for me, I figured that there's nothing to lose, i would buy the d and d slip-on or the roadhouse slip-on if this mod doesn't work.  They run for less than $400.

Vogloo14....Thanks for the info. Your right about playing with the original exhaust. If it produces a better tone without having to go through the expense of a new exhaust ....Great! From what I have found so far, D&D looks like the best slip-on. It is much thinner than the OEM one and priced at about $350.00. With the slip-ons, you can usually get away with not having to "re-tune" the ignition. If opening up the internal plate does not work, no harm done. I just buy the slip-on and go from there.
Also, I understand with the slip-on you do not disturb the O2 sensor as you do when you replace the entire exhaust. This is why you must re-tune the bike when you  do the whole exhaust system.
Anyway, thanks again.

I also took the stock exhaust off and went in through the front side with a 1 inch whole saw.  all told I put 2 one inch holes in the internal plate and 2 one inch holes through the baffle in the front side of the muffler.  It ended up not too loud or too soft with a low rumble and a little bit of an airy sound that I don't like very much.  I didn't retune anything and didn't notice any problems.

I found a few interesting issues on YOU TUBE under Stratoliner Exhaust. One guy pulled the packing and left the baffle in and another guy claimed he pulled it all out. On the video they both sounded good. The best sound  was on a video of a guy running the D&D. Check them out on You TUBE.
