If you'll join this forum: http://forums.delphiforums.com/yamaha1100(it's free) and check out their "knowledge Base" under the tab "webpage" you'l find everthing you need to know about pies and jetting, and there is a great group of people there that will help you with any questions. I retted my 04 for probaly less than 50 bucks. You might be able to do it for less depending on what all you want or need to do. 2steps

I used the same forum for much of my information as well. I went ahead and installed a set of V&H slip-on pipes rather than the full set. Slip-ons are just the muffler part, full pipes replace the entire pipe up to the cylinder head. You use slip-ons to change the sound of your bike and full pipes to gain performance. Generally speaking using slip-ons doesn't require rejetting since the exhaust is still restricted by the factory exhaust headers. My Harley buddies love the new pipes on my bike and they sound awesome, especially since they've been wore-in with a few thousand miles. If you go with a full set of pipes the jet kits usually run $50-$80 plus installation. Rejetting isn't complicated to a mechanic but since its a precision job I recommend taking it to the shop if the idea of taking a drill to your carb sounds nutty. About $150-200 would be about what I'd expect to pay to have a bike rejetted and tuned.

I have a V Star 1100 also and changed to full set of Hard-Krome exhaust with the carbs rejetted and a K&N filter ... as suggested by the mechanic. The result was 5-7 hp increase, an unbelievable sound ( for a Metric Bike )and it feels like I took the stuffing out of it. Well worth the cost.
