I have a 1983 V65 with 22,000 mi. While riding recently I went over an elevated man hole cover and got the rear wheel off the ground. When it came down it made a clicking noise and would not pull itself. If you put the bike on the center stand and put it in gear it will spin the rear wheel in every gear, but when you apply pressure against it,it starts clicking and will stop spinning. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong?? If you pull the boot back on the front of the driveshaft it appears to turn normally. I took the clutch cover off and all the visible gears looked good. No metal shavings! If you put the bike in gear and try to rotate the wheel by hand,it feels like two gears are slipping by. It will catch and then slip free. Anyone with any experience with this???

HI, Sounds like you stripped the pinion or ring gear. You may have to take the rear end apart. IF you can stop the wheel from moving while in gear the ear end is broke. Try to find a unit in the junk yard or on ebay.. good luck.. scruffy

Thanks for the reply Scruffy! The clicking noise comes from the front of the driveline, and the driveshaft seems to turn without slipping at the rear wheel. Is there some type of pinion gear between the front of the driveshaft that connects to the clutch? The problem seems to be internal. I will explore the rear end more closely though. Thanks again for the suggestion!

I took the back wheel and the drive unit out today. Nothing like removing 25 year old rusty bolts! Everything looks good so far.... I am now trying to figure out how to get the driveshaft out, and I will need to find some tools to remove the swing arm. Hopefully I will find the problem before I get into the cases!!........ I am hoping it's a u-joint.

I FOUND IT!!!!! After borrowing a large hex socket from a buddy to remove the swing arm, and several choice words to pull it out of the frame, I found the front yoke on the drive shaft is split. Now I have to find parts. I think a local repair shop has a wrecked one that I can get parts from.
