In my humble opinion, you are going down the wrong road.

Thinnest actual DOT approved beanie is still going to require 1-2 in of Styrofoam to absorb impact. If you want the stylish look, go for a Novelty helmet. Most of them have a little DOT sticker you can slap on the back.
BTW, got a friend who destroys his old real helmets with axes and sledgehammers. Tells me it takes several whacks. Bet I could crack a novelty with a 8 oz tack hammer.

As someone who recently had to throw a helmet away after an accident, I can tell you that buying a helmet for the way it looks is a bad idea.

woman was killed here (Tennessee) recently while she was wearing a novelty helmet and the rear tire blew out on her husbands bike. He lived, she didn't. What a waste. Things may have been different if she had a DOT approved helmet on her head.

There is what I think may be safer helmet than DOT/SNELL, but, it's not legal in the US. Canada, and Europe do a different test on the helmet, it's a larger strike force, but, it's only done once at any spot. I believe a 2nd hit is done on another part of the helmet, at the same higher force. Acceptable G's are lower.
I would consider slapping a DOT sticker on one of them, but, I understand the strengths and limitations of those helmets.
Novelty helmets on the other hand are just on the head to avoid a ticker. Women in Tennessee probably would have prefered the ticket.
