Male - 6'3" - Intent to ride from USA to South America - advice?

Joe, thanks for your detailed responses, they're much appreciated. You've convinced me that a cruiser is not the way to go. That's a big step.

I'll have another look at dual sport bikes. The KLR650 looks like a good option. I'd prefer belt drive though. I'm sure I'll find the right bike with a bit more research.

What keeps jumping out at me is Kawasaki Versys or BMW GS 800.
