K, so I am going to join the dark side. Just too sure which end of the pool to jump in at. I have had sport bikes for years. Started with a CBR F4 (600cc). Then to the CBR 929rr, then to the Aprilia Tuono 998cc (which I currently still own). I am working on selling or trading my Tuono for a cruiser. I've always had a thing for cruisers and sport bikes and I think it's time to go for comfort and style.
I have been doing some research and have had my eye on the Suzuki M50, sporty styling and good handling. The only problem is, I know how the power is addictive and how eventually you want to get something bigger, then bigger, etc. Considering I now have a V-Twin bike with ~140 horsepower and 75 ft-lbs of torque (starting pretty low I might add), I am a little skeptical of going for an 800cc. I just don't want to be too disappointed and want something bigger. But at the same time I like the lighter weight, and am a little scared of the heavyweights(considering I weigh in at 135 soaking wet). Plus coming in from the sport bike arena handling is a huge priority.
Is there anyone else with experience in switching sides? I know I don't need (nor want really) anything super huge, because I am not that BIG of a guy. And I have driven a few cruisers now and then (just some older honda shadows) through some back streets. I am definitely not a novice rider so I wouldn't really want to get into an "entry level" cruiser. Would the M50 be a mistake for an experienced rider? The handling and weight are appealing to me, but would the lack in power outweigh it's benefits for a someone in my position?
Thanks for any advice.

You might want to look at something along the lines of 1100cc to 1300cc. I'm a Yamaha guy so I don't know too much about the M50, but I do know that the VSTARs may not have 140 horsepower, but they do lay down more than 60 lb-ft of torque. They aren't so big as to be intimedating, but still have the power to do what you want to do.

An 1100 or 1300 should keep you happy.

Depends on exactly what you're looking for. If you want a cruiser with gobs of power, think V-Rod, V-max, or possibly a 750 Magna. Several other 7-800 cc bikes packed a fair wallop too, Vulcan 750, Intruder 800, etc. If you're just looking for a more comfortable ride and the ability to carry a little more stuff, possibly the Sports-touring category, Eg. Concours (old or new), St1100/ST1300, etc may float your boat. If you want luxury and handling, then you are going to be looking at the gl1800 Wing, The BMW R1200LT, a Victory Vision, or the HD electra-glide. (I bought used 1800 Wing).
If you're looking for true Cruiser, I'd agree, the 1100-1300 cc tends to have good acceleration, good (for a cruiser) handling, and a good price point. In this group, I'd check out the Royal Star Tour Deluxe. A little pricier, but, with a 4 cyl engine, it may feel a little more familiar than a v-twin.
Hope this helps

I ride a Suzuki Marauder 1600 (the 2004 version of the M95) aka the Kawasaki Mean Streak, and love it. It's a good mix of sport and cruiser features. Big v-twin power, strong brakes, decent lean angles, and stock rubber made to grip the corners. Sit on one in the show room, if you like the stance you'll love it on the road. Good luck, chrome-side up.

HI; I have an 05 C50T. It is not a power house. IF you want power and speed the M50 is not for you. 49 hp and about 30-35ft lbs of torque. They are great cruizers. good power for an 800cc. The 5 speed could use another gear. Some times . Most the time it is no big deal. It does take the corners very well. you can lay it over untill the pegs drag. It is very steady. When push real hard in the corners the rear shock could be better. The bike tends to wallo ( wiggle around) when pressed. This is my experiance with the C50T. The bike will do 100+ if you want. Mine has. It is stable doesn't move around like some I have ridden. As a cruiser I think it is very good. I have never had any trouble with the bike or engine. Runs smooth easy to shift. brakes work well. Suzuki should have put duel disc up front. Might look at the C90. Hope the 2cent's was worth it.... ..scruffy

I've just gone the other way, sold my Nomad and bought a Suzuki Bandit and loving it. Good advice from jmh-vz1600 though. The Kawasaki mean streak/Suzuki Marauder is pretty quick with good cornering abilities and good brakes (all for a cruiser of course) and would be a good place to start.
