My V-Star 1100 appears to kill batteries. I can jump it and it will start no problem but it will not charge. What is wrong?

HI; How old is the battery? Are the battery terminals CLEAN and TIGHT? Is there any water in the battery? 1. If the battery is more than 4 years old. Get a new one. 2. Clean the cables and battery terminals. Use baking soda this nutrializes the acid on the out side. Mix a table spoon up in a small glass clean with a old tooth brush. 3. Remove the battery caps and check the water level. The plates should just be covered. Try not to over fill. This will just leak asid all over the bike when the battery is being charged. 4. Check the voltage output with a volt meter at the battery engine off. Then start engine and check again. The sceond check should be higher.. HOPE this helps...scruffy..

Basic electrical. 1) normal voltage is 12.6V for a lead acid. 2) you could have a weak or dead cell which would reduce the voltage by about 2V.
To find out what's going on, you need a voltmeter, and a charger( with an ampmeter). Dead cells are easy. If you put the voltmeter on, you get 12.6, if you apply a load (turn it on), you will see an almost immediate drop in voltage. If you shut it off, and hook up the charger, you will se 14.x volts across the terminals, but no current flowing.
Weak battery is a little harder. Attach voltmeter, attach the load, and watch the voltmeter(have charger available). Normal is the voltage slowly drops as all cells get depleted. Weak cell is almost like that, but there's a sudden drop in voltage. Usually happens in a couple minutes.
Next is the charging system. start the bike, and measure voltage. At idle, it's not much to write home about -bikes go dead all the time if they're at idle. Bring the rpms up, and keep an eye on the voltage. You should be somewhere between 14.1 and about 14.5.
