Okay, so here's my problem. I just recently bought a 99 V-Star 1100 Custom from a co-worker...(BIG Mistake!!) Put it in the shop to get a 10,000 mile servicing done to it and knew of some issues I was going to have to fix in time....(rust in tank, carb rejet, and new slip ons to make it a bit louder). I put all my parts on order and while waiting for everything to come in I come down with a starting problem. finally got my bike towed back to my house for all the maintenance. It has always been a little tough to get started, probably due to all the other issues. After it broke down this is what I had. I'd hit the button and hear the starter "whir" but would not engage to turn the engine. Everyone I have talked to has told me "it's probably the bendix." I am now to dealing with my starter but now need help. I followed the manual's check for the starter, but unfortunately do not have the proper tools to do it. In a feeble attempt to try to get an idea of what is wrong, I plugged in the battery and hooked up the starter but did not install. Once again, I hit the switch but now all I am hearing is a clicking noise coming from the seat pan. I am now thinking it might be the relay but really need the help to locate the problem. Been off the bike for about two weeks and really looking forward to riding it again and hearing the sound of the new mufflers. Also, if I get the problem located, I can due one ordering of parts.
Thanks for the help!

Probably not the relay. That's what's clicking when you try to start. Most likely the starter is bad. The aligning bolts are too soft and the starter's generally considered the design weak spot on the 1100 vstar. Check out starter comments here:

If it's any consolation, mine went bad on my 2006 already. You can try taking the starter apart, regreasing and replacing the bolts. You might get lucky and not have to replace the entire starter.
