I'll second that. I lived in Reno, Carson City, and Alturas. I have a friend in Orange County, CA so I've been on that road a lot (usually in a car because I didn't have a bike). Some of the nearby scenery includes Death Valley, Mt. Whitney, Mono Lake, Bode, Bridgeport, Topaz Lake, Reno, Tahoe, and Eagle Lake. There are a bunch of other post card lakes at around 10,000 feet that I know of that I didn't visit. You also have the June Lakes loop, Mammoth Mountain, and the White Mountain range which has the oldest living things on the planet (bristlecone pines).
You may want to head over a hill to Surprise Valley if you spend the night in Alturas. I just think it's a cool town. I worked for the county schools up there and was stuck in "traffic" going from Alturas to Surprise Valley once (The traffic was a heard of Antelope walking down the street - Those guys are a lot bigger than you'd think).
I think 395 is the most beautiful highway in America. Route 1/101 along the CA/Oregon coast may be a close second with the Redwoods and the precipitous coast.
