Roadstar transmission whine?

I ride a 2002 Roadstar Silverado with 39,000 miles on it.  I've never had a problem one with it but on a ride this weekend a guy mentioned to me that there was a pronounced whine coming from my rear-end (the bike) when we would gear up and down on a Children's Toy ride.  So--when I release the accelerator and leave the gear engaged--I get a pretty nasty chirp and whine.
Any suggestions?  I'm fairly handy so I can hopefully do the work myself and avoid the stealerships.

Could it be the belt that you hear?
