My wife had a 2001.  I ride a VSTAR 1100.  I loved that Vulcan and came to really respect it over time (e.g. whenever I'd ride it).  That bike has some serious pickup, and I thought the exhaust (stock) sounded like a small bock Chevy when you gave it a yank.  Not the prettiest bike on the road (beauty is in the eye of the beholder), but from some angles it was really a cool looking bike (was black and grey).  Shame it's going out of production, but it had a really long run.  If I could, I would've held on to that bike for some jaunts.

I just purchased a 08 Kawi vulcan 900 custom."Candy Lime Green". It's my first bike. The Safety Course helped me a lot!! I put in 900 miles so far. Love every minute of it.
