I just thought of something...

All evasive maneuvering involves changing the speed and/or direction of travel. Obstacle avoidance countersteering changes the direction but not the speed.

Theoretically, if you see something coming at you at very close range and a high rate of speed, from the side, changin direction won't avoid the wreck, so you're only practical option is to change speed. If acceleration/braking would be too slow to be adequately effective, I suppose deliberately highsiding to accelerate just your body away from where the wreck is happening, might work. After all, a 500 pound bike traveling at 50 mph can easily catapult you away at speeds in excess of 100 mph. Of course, that may just get you into more trouble.

I think I'll just continue to avoid such situations, instead of trying to practice this technique.

i have had both but the goldwing intergreated brakes are far superior to the harley. i have wondered what would happen if i had to stop the electra and i found out last week , i was running about 50mph when all of a sudden i saw a deer to my right and he was coming fast. i got on my back brakes and was in a sideways slide immediately. i have also had to stop on my wing and it and my back wheel never locked. i havebeen riding bikes since the 60's so i think i know how to ride a motorcycle. my point when things happen you need all safety features you can get.don't get me wrong i still learn all the time but i like intergreated brake. i still love my harley, it fun to ride but rmember the braking system could be better.

I've heard this many times that an experienced rider doesn't need them and is VERY WRONG. I don't care who you are or how long you've been riding, there is no way you can even come close to doing what a good set of ABS brakes does. Especially in a panic situation on slick roads, many an experienced rider has gone down where an ABS equipped bike may very well have saved their butts. ABS will pulse the brakes several times a SECOND, no human can duplicate that action.

you r so right no human can ever duplicate what abs can do I am a auto technician 4 mercedes benz & when they sent me 2 school they demonstrated how abs works & why it works & the same applys 4 2 wheelers.. educate yourselves so u can make an educated decision.........................................................

I was reading Joe's post from a while ago and some of the more recent posts. It occurred to me that there is one thing non-abs will do better. It is much more likely to cause the bike to lay down because of the skid. To lay down a bike w/ ABS, you do have to make the choice.
I'll take the better stopping, and hope I make the right call on the one time dropping it is the best choice.

There is maintenance problem you should do proper maintenance of engine as well brakes to avoid accident.
